Middle school students who are identified as GATE will be placed in accelerated language arts and social science classes with other students who meet the accelerated course performance criteria. All 6-8th-grade students may also be placed in an accelerated mathematics class if they meet the District’s placement criteria as determined by the CUSD math placement assessment. For the specific criteria for accelerated 6-8th-grade courses, please contact your child's counselor at his/her middle school.

The following are the placement guidelines for Accelerated English and Social Science classes at the middle school level for 2023-24.

6th Grade
|
All GATE students are placed in courses which offer accelerated language arts and social science content along with other GATE-identified students. Additional students may be added to accelerated classes or clusters if they meet the requirement noted below for 5th grade:
1) Smarter Balanced Scaled Score of 2687

7th Grade
|
All GATE students are placed in courses which offer accelerated language arts and social science content along with other GATE-identified students. Additional students may be added to accelerated classes or clusters if they meet 2 of 3 requirements noted below from 6th grade:
1) Smarter Balanced Scaled Score of 2711 or higher
2) 3.5 GPA in English 6 Acc or 4.0 GPA in English 6
3) iReady 6th grade spring reading score of 658 or above

8th Grade

All GATE students are placed in courses which offer accelerated language arts and social science content along with other GATE-identified students. Additional students may be added to accelerated classes or clusters if they meet 2 of 3 requirements noted below from 7th grade:
1) Smarter Balanced Scaled Score of 2733 or higher
2) 3.5 GPA in English 7 Acc or 4.0 GPA in English 7
3) iReady 7th grade spring reading score of 670 or above
